Learn The Facts About Pollen

Pollen is known as a coarse type of powder that consists of pollen grains. These pollen grains produce sperm cells that come from seed plants. The grains have a firm coat that protects these sperm cells when they move between the pistil of one flower and the stamens of another. All pollen grains contain certain vegetative cells that contain tube nucleus that can produce new pollen tubes. These pollen tubes are surrounded by a wall called a cellulose cell and a thick outer sporopollenin wall. Pollen particles and grains can come in all sizes, shapes, and species. As a flower develops, groups of sporogenous cells start to form in the pollen sac. Tree pollen is a popular type of pollen that causes many allergies for people. Pollen can come off trees such as birch, elm, poplar, walnut, cypress, and maple trees. Grasses such as orchard, red top, blue grass, and timothy also cause pollen allergies for some. Most of the flowering plants such as the rose, tend to have a waxy, heavy pollen that will not be wind-blown. Weeds such as pigweed, Russian thistle, sagebrush, cockleweed, and ragweed all can be blown around in the air. Pollen season usually will begin in the spring, but can start as early as January in the Southern United States. Seasonal allergies can then last as long as October and until the pollen ceases to produce. If you want to reduce hay fever and the symptoms of allergies from occurring, you can try to using different techniques to reduce them. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology recommends that allergy sufferers should perform their outdoor activities in the early hours of the morning. When taking a vacation make sure you go to areas where pollen and pollen allergies are not major concerns. It is suggested that you should close your windows at nighttime and use air conditioning instead of fans that might blow pollen around and throughout the house. Avoid raking leaves and growing indoor plants when it is peak pollen season, and try to spend limited time outdoors when pollen is at it's high.
